Pastacurean App

  • Role: Design and development
  • Date: February 2017
  • Course: VCD 3: Web Design at the University of Notre Dame

The Pastacurean App is a fun, informative, and interactive game/web app for pasta-lovers, based off of the fictional personality of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, mascot for the pseudo-faith Pastafarianism. It allows users to create a series of pasta recipes and then 'Discover' new recipes based off their tastes.

The app was designed with original vector graphics and illustrations and developed with HTML/CSS/JS around the Bootstrap framework. It features friendly colors, simple interactions, and clean vector shapes.

User Experience

PArt 1: Information

The landing page features the Flying Spaghetti Monster with subtle animations and tabs explaining what the app is about, who the monster is, some background on Pastafarianism, and play instructions. The first goal is to inform pasta-loving users about Pastafarianism in a fun and friendly way.

Part 2: Creation

Users are then guided through six of "the monster's favorite pasta dishes" and must create them as shown and described in the recipe book while the timer counts down. Depending on their success, either a win or lose screen is shown.

Alternate win and lose screens

Part 3: Discovery

Whether the user wins or loses the game part of the app, they are then prompted to 'Explore' real recipes based off of those in the monster's recipe book. All of the exploration cards link users to their original recipe sources.

Concept iterations

Challenges:

  • Creating over two dozen unique screen layouts and 50+ original illustrations
  • Implementing and customizing Javascript for the countdown function of the gameplay
  • Creating an app that is inherently 'silly' but has many dynamically moving parts
  • Creating a multi-panel interactive 'cutting board' of ingredients that the user can place into their pan
